My Record Cabinet

the magnetic zeros

here (2012)

The anticipation felt while waiting for a band to walk on stage can be rather exhilarating. The night was getting late as we anxiously awaited Mumford And Sons to materialise on the Brisbane Riverside Stage. When a 'back-up' band appeared my heart sank, my feet ached and I felt slightly annoyed, to be honest.

But as soon as Alex Ebert opened his mouth he had me and the entire audience spellbound. The Magnetic Zeros had us revelling in the warm embrace of their magnificent tunes.

HERE is the sound of a group of masterful musicians making music for the messiah. The sound is joyful, uplifting, intimate and rather heavenly. Lyrics such as 'I don't want to pray to my maker, I just wanna be feeling free', 'I'm a man on fire walking down your street, with one guitar and two dancing feet', 'Reaching for heaven is what I am on earth to do' and 'One lover one lover, one love to another' jump out of the speakers in the shape of a poetic street preacher.

Some may describe Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros a Californian psychedelic, hippy, folk band, I describe them as positively infectious.
