During my high-school days in the early 1980's, I had a friend named Bertram who was absolutely obsessed with Genesis. Like most fans of 'Prog Rock', he was a musical aficionado. He only listened to Peter Gabriel era Genesis, to him any other configuration was simply a musical compromise.
On this their 5th album the band works beautifully together, tackling technical passages, intricate melodies and progressive romps with apparent ease. Peter Gabriel, famous for his distinctive vocal style, range, and his array of character voices really makes this album.
The early Genesis sound is truly a magical, mystical journey with each member adding their wizardry to the mix. Classical piano, an array of keyboards and organs, soaring guitars, impressive drumming, percussion, flute and of course those familiar 'folk rock' styled vocal harmonies.
SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND is both a warning to the ramifications of globalisation and a reminder to appreciate and to hold onto our heritage for as long as we can.
Unfortunately the "Battle Of Epping Forest" soon became the battle of the band. Within a few years, Genesis had lost both their theatrical singer and legendary lead guitarist. Many fans could not conceive the thought of Genesis being able to continue without Peter Gabriel and Steve Hacket, but the remaining three members with Phil Collins fronting the band proved us all wrong. Shorter, slicker, pop songs with mainstream appeal took the band to the top of the charts all around the world.
PERSONAL NOTES:
I am still in regular contact with Bertram who has been living in Germany for decades. We often reminisce about the 'good old days' at high-school in Singapore. He told me recently that he still listens to Genesis and to Peter Gabrielle. It is reassuring to know that in life some things remain the same.
