deja vu (1970)

I am a big fan of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies, so this album has a special place in my heart. DEJA VU showcases these talented individuals, who together are arguably greater than the sum of the parts. Supergroup albums are not always successful due to the lack of cohesion- perhaps the ego of the individuals cannot grasp the concept of sharing the spotlight.

DEJA VU, however, allows the band members to retain their individualism while interweaving the CSN(Y) sound into the DEJA VU tapestry. CSN(Y) is a masterclass in songwriting, musicianship, vocal harmonies and of course those iconic voices.

1970 was an amazing year for Rock'n'Roll with artists such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple dominating the charts. Up amongst the purveyors of Heavy Rock were Simon & Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead and of course CSN(Y). The Yin & Yang if you like.

NOTE: Joni Mitchell wrote the single "Woodstock" which also appears on her album THE LADIES OF THE CANYON (1970). Graham Nash and Joni Mitchell were lovers during the making of DEJA VU.

Gerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead contributed steel guitar to the Graham Nash track "Treat Your Mother Well". Gerry was the consummate 'muso' who shared his love of music~ his vibe certainly attracted his tribe. The Grateful Dead also released their masterpiece AMERICAN BEAUTY in 1970.
